Beau
âW
here to, Captain?â I glance at Kasey sitting shotgun. Sheâs got the window rolled down and her red hairâs flying. Sheâs kicked off her sandals and her bare feet are on the dashboard.
âWouldnât you like to know?â She peeks at me from under her lashes. Dang this girlâs adorable. Correction. This woman is beautiful. And she might be crazy, but crazy suits her. I just need to remember I canât be looking at Bradyâs sister through this particular filter.
You know. The one where all I see is how much I want to kiss her. Again.
âDrive by the school,â she says.
My gut clenches. âReally?â I take a beat. Then I take another. âThe last time we were there...was pretty messed up.â
âYouâre telling me.â She gazes out the windshield. Itâs streaked with dirt. If Iâd known sheâd end up in my dadâs truck, I wouldâve washed the glass. Heck. I wouldâve polished every inch of this old thing. I just want to take care of Kasey. Make things right with her.
âThe thing is,â I say as gently as I can, âI donât think going by the schoolâs such a great idea.â
âToo bad. You owe me, Beau. Just do it.â Well. Sheâs got me there. I canât say no. Or maybe I donât want to.
Before long weâre rounding the east side of the lake and heading toward the cemetery. Our destination is a few blocks up, beyond a stretch of moss-covered tombstones. Brady and I used to play hide and seek here, accusing each other of being scared. To me the ghosts at the school are worse, so Iâm driving extra slow on purpose.
Just past the cemetery, I turn into the parking lot. Somebodyâs raked spruce leaves into piles along the curb. Even though the stone buildings are empty now, I can taste the thousands of bologna sandwiches I ate in the cafeteria. I pull up and park. Before Iâve even shut off the engine, Kaseyâs out of her seatbelt, hopping down from the truck and slamming the door.
She pokes her head in through the open window. âFollow me.â
âHold on a minute,â I say. But she doesnât hold on a minute. She takes off at a run. âThe concreteâs got to be hot,â I call out. âYou want your sandals?â Sheâs either too far gone to hear, or sheâs intentionally ignoring me. Either way, I collect her sandals from the floor of the truck to bring with me.
I may not be able to kiss Kasey Graham, but I can make sure she doesnât burn her feet. In fact, if sheâd let me, Iâd take care of that crazy, beautiful woman for the rest of my life.
Get real, Beau. She hates you. And talking to yourself wonât change that.
I make my way around the front of the school, but Kaseyâs out of sight. I know where she went. Dang. As I head toward the gym, my stomach twists, and it keeps on twisting the closer I get to the spot where I broke Kasey. Not her heart.
